Making a scene: A new generation of New Jersey hip-hop asserts itself
"Essentially where we're from, people don't dream up the scene," says Jean Lebrun, 26, a Linden indigenous. "That's one of the reasons why we started doing our own shows."
Lebrun, who grew up listening to the Haitian music of his parents and portable radio hip-hop, is operations manager at Submerged Art Gallery, the space that hosted the New Year's fete with the Rebels. The gallery is downstairs. Upstairs is for parties. Lebrun wants to come in the third floor a studio.
He's also a member of NJ Street Klan , a hip-hop collective that includes artists, DJs and producers. Among its members are the Rebels, a gang he says is "on the come up." The "Klan" name represents the notion of turning a uninterested into a positive, says Lebrun.
